Scientific Verification Is the Basis for Correct Decisionmaking of Major Project

Pan Jiazheng,Wang Jiazhu

Strategic Study of CAE 2001, Volume 3, Issue 3,   Pages 21-26

Abstract:

The Three Gorges Project is the largest multi-purpose hydro-development project ever built in China and so in the world. The re-verification on TGP undertaken by 412 Chinese experts from 1986 to 1989, laid the foundation for the execution of the project construction. Since 1993, the construction has been commenced and proceeded smoothly according to the approved general schedule. The project investment is well controlled within the approved estimates of the preliminary design. The quality of the work already completed is satisfactory to the design requirements. Several important conclusions drawn from the re-verification have been proved preliminarily to be correct. And a series of major technical challenges, such as river closure of the grand channel, the construction of the deen water cofferdam, the excavation stability of the permanent ship lock with high slope, and the extremely high intensive concrete placement, have been met. The practice has fully proved the necessity and correctness of the previous scientific verification.

A new proof of Honeycomb Conjecture by fractal geometry methods

Tong ZHANG, Kai DING

Frontiers of Mechanical Engineering 2013, Volume 8, Issue 4,   Pages 367-370 doi: 10.1007/s11465-013-0273-7

Abstract:

Based on fractal geometry, we put forward a concise and straightforward method to prove Honeycomb Conjecture—a classical mathematic problem. Hexagon wins the most efficient covering unit in the two- dimensional space, compared with the other two covering units—triangle and square. From this point of view, honeycomb is treated as a hierarchical fractal structure that fully fills the plane. Therefore, the total side length and area are easily calculated and from the results, the covering efficiency of each possible unit is provided quantitatively.

Frontiers of Engineering Management 2020, Volume 7, Issue 3,   Pages 396-403 doi: 10.1007/s42524-019-0039-y

Abstract: As building practices change, procedures that seemed indispensable at one point can be abandoned for others, one example of which is the bill of quantities (B/Q). Research into the extant literature attributes the declining use of B/Qs to a multitude of reasons, such as its complexity, the potentially long time required to produce it, the growth in popularity of non-traditional procurement systems, and the challenge of using the information within the document in a construction schedule. With these issues in mind, building information modeling (BIM) and virtual reality (VR) are combined and proposed as a potential solution that allows inclusion of the client into the design process. Following a literature review and precedent study, an experiment was carried out using this new process to simulate a client’s design decisions on window and interior furnishings. The choices made by the client using VR automatically updated a B/Q schedule built in Revit and allowed them to have a firm understanding of project costs. Besides giving the client more confidence in a pleasing final outcome, the technology also ensured an up-to-date, accurate, and easily understandable B/Q. The proposed method features great potential savings in cost and time and gives the B/Q a newfound importance in future construction processes. The research case presented in this paper is a stepping stone in exploring new opportunities offered by VR and BIM and how they could improve the reliability and accuracy of traditional procurement within construction, specifically within the B/Q document.

A reliable and practical reference objective for the deviation diagnosis of energy system parameters

Liping LI, Zheng LI,

Frontiers in Energy 2009, Volume 3, Issue 4,   Pages 440-445 doi: 10.1007/s11708-009-0051-8

Abstract: The core objective to optimize a complex energy system is to set the reference target to guide the parameter adjustment of system operation. In this paper, a new case-based approach is proposed based on an online performance assessment program and its long-term operation data for a large power unit. The online model of a coal-fired power unit’s performance assessment is demonstrated, and the distribution pattern of the performance index is revealed by statistical analysis of the abundant data. The fundamental issues (representation of the similarity of two thermal processes, similarity measure, etc.) are tackled. The key sections and key parameters for the completion of similarity determination are proposed, which are essential to realize a case-based strategy. A full-scope simulator of power unit is used to test the availability of the method. The advantage of the case-based approach is the integrality of information over other methods.

Frontiers of Information Technology & Electronic Engineering 2021, Volume 22, Issue 2,   Pages 141-286 doi: 10.1631/FITEE.1900726

Abstract: is an effective method of combining existing atomic services into a value-added service based on cost and quality of service (QoS). To meet the diverse needs of users and to offer pricing services based on QoS, we propose a auction mechanism based on s, which is and can be beneficial in selecting services based on s and dynamically determining the price of services. We have proven that the proposed auction mechanism achieves desirable properties including truthfulness and individual rationality. Furthermore, we propose an auction algorithm to implement the auction mechanism, and carry out extensive experiments based on real data. The results verify that the proposed auction mechanism not only achieves desirable properties, but also helps users find a satisfactory scheme.

Environmental pollution and DNA methylation: carcinogenesis, clinical significance, and practical applications

Yi Cao

Frontiers of Medicine 2015, Volume 9, Issue 3,   Pages 261-274 doi: 10.1007/s11684-015-0406-y

Abstract:

Environmental pollution is one of the main causes of human cancer. Exposures to environmental carcinogens result in genetic and epigenetic alterations which induce cell transformation. Epigenetic changes caused by environmental pollution play important roles in the development and progression of environmental pollution-related cancers. Studies on DNA methylation are among the earliest and most conducted epigenetic research linked to cancer. In this review, the roles of DNA methylation in carcinogenesis and their significance in clinical medicine were summarized, and the effects of environmental pollutants, particularly air pollutants, on DNA methylation were introduced. Furthermore, prospective applications of DNA methylation to environmental pollution detection and cancer prevention were discussed.

A practical multi-lane factor model of bridges based on multi-truck presence considering lane load disparities

Frontiers of Structural and Civil Engineering 2021, Volume 15, Issue 4,   Pages 877-894 doi: 10.1007/s11709-021-0756-2

Abstract: Many bridge design specifications consider multi-lane factors (MLFs) a critical component of the traffic load model. Measured multi-lane traffic data generally exhibit significant lane disparities in traffic loads over multiple lanes. However, these disparities are not considered in current specifications. To address this drawback, a multi-coefficient MLF model was developed based on an improved probabilistic statistical approach that considers the presence of multiple trucks. The proposed MLF model and approach were calibrated and demonstrated through an example site. The model sensitivity analysis demonstrated the significant influence of lane disparity of truck traffic volume and truck weight distribution on the MLF. Using the proposed approach, the experimental site study yielded MLFs comparable with those directly calculated using traffic load effects. The exclusion of overloaded trucks caused the proposed approach, existing design specifications, and conventional approach of ignoring lane load disparity to generate comparable MLFs, while the MLFs based on the proposed approach were the most comprehensive. The inclusion of overloaded trucks caused the conventional approach and design specifications to overestimate the MLFs significantly. Finally, the benefits of the research results to bridge practitioners were discussed.

Confined masonry as practical seismic construction alternative–the experience from the 2014 Cephalonia

Fillitsa KARANTONI, Stavroula PANTAZOPOULOU, Athanasios GANAS

Frontiers of Structural and Civil Engineering 2018, Volume 12, Issue 3,   Pages 270-290 doi: 10.1007/s11709-017-0390-1

Abstract:

During August 1953 three strong earthquakes of magnitude ranging from 6.3 to 7.2 shook the Ionian Island of Cephalonia (Kefalonia), Greece, and destroyed almost the entire building stock of the Island which consisted primarily of traditional unreinforced masonry (URM) houses. The authorities went on to restructuring of the building stock, using a structural system that is most like what is known today as confined masonry. They designed about 14 types of one- to two-storey buildings providing the engineers with detailed construction plans. These buildings are known as “Arogi” buildings (Arogi in Greek meaning Aid). On the 24th of January and 3rd of February 2014, two earthquakes of magnitude 6.1 and 6.0 struck the island, causing significant soil damages, developing excessively high ground accelerations. Surprisingly, no damage was reported in the “Arogi” buildings. The seismic behavior of the buildings is examined by FEM linear analysis and it is compared to that of URM structures. Computed results illustrate that the displacements of identical URM buildings would be about twice the magnitudes observed in the corresponding “Arogi” ones, with the implication that the earthquake sequence of 2014 would have caused critical damage should the type of structure be of the URM type. Furthermore, it is illustrated that this low cost alternative method of construction is a very effective means of producing earthquake resilient structures, whereas further reduction of seismic displacement may be achieved in the order of 50% with commensurate effects on damage potential, when reinforced slabs are used to replace the timber roofs.
